Understanding Human Seminal Plasma Hypersensitivity

Yes, you heard me right! Human Seminal Plasma Hypersensitivity or commonly known as semen allergy. Semen allergy…?

As the same with other substance, it is possible for people to be allergic to semen. Though it is a rare and unusual disorder yet it exists and is a problematic condition. Symptoms may occur few minutes after exposure to semen that can cause localized or systemic reactions from the proteins in the semen after intercourse. Common reactions are vaginal swelling, itching, pain and burning sensation. And in severe cases, difficulty breathing and anaphylaxis may occur.

But the worse thing is, it could be devastating in the couple’s relationship and embarrassing at some point. And women may suffer in silence.

The usual treatment is simply to avoid physical contact with the semen. Now, it is a problem if the couple wants to conceive. Using condom is the simplest method of treatment and other options include desensitization. It is the gradual introduction of seminal protein until such time it is tolerable.

The good thing is, there’s no reported death of this kind of disorder so far.
